Content Management System (CMS)

How does a Content Management System work?

Content management software can best be compared to text processing software such as Microsoft Word. The main difference between CMS and Word is that you'll be creating or modifying your webpages on a webserver instead of Word documents on the hard disk of your pc.

A userfriendly CMS allows you to work intuitively on your webpages via the same keyboard shortcuts as in Office Word and/or via easily recognizable buttons to change fonts, font colours, insert images and tables, italicize text, add bold text, etc...

The image above illustrates how a CMS looks like.
The visual appearance and the functionality of the software depends on your specific needs, de extent of your web site and the budget to you wish to invest.

How much does a CMS cost?

There is a wide variety of content management systems available in an equally wide price range.
Each of them has their own advantages and disadvantages which can render it more difficult to make the right choice for your needs. We are here to help you to find the most recommended solution which will meet your current and future online needs!

A basic CMS is available from 450 € and is already a very complete and user friendly solution for small websites (up to about 150 pages).
More advanced systems allow to update larger, database-driven websites. These custom-made systems are available from from 800 €.

Below you'll find more information about the different types of content management systems and their financial and practical advantages.

CMS types

Depending on the size of your web site and the budget you wish to invest in software to update your own web site, you'll have the choice to choose either of the two main types of CMS:

  • Stand-alone CMS: this software will be installed locally on the hard disk of your pc. This solution allows you to update your website only from this pc.
  • Web-based CMS: this software will be installed on the webserver that hosts your website. The main advantage over a stand-alone CMS is that you'll be able to update your web site from any computer that has Internet access. After a login procedure with a username and password you'll be granted access to your CMS and will be able to update your web site.

Advantages of a Content Management System

  • Thanks to a CMS you can update your website as easily as creating a document with Office Word.
  • The learning curve is extremely low for people who have worked with Office Word. The cost for training are therefore negligible.
  • The need to hire a webmaster to update your web site is eliminated by using a CMS which enables you to quickly update your web site yourself. You save both time and money by personally taking care of content-related modifications to your own web site.

A content management system offers more than the above mentioned advantages.
